MYTH: Tanning beds are a safe alternative to the sun

Best Anti-Aging: If you think a tanning bed is a safe alternative to the sun, think again. While the tanning industry is happy to have you know they filter out most of the UVB burning rays, the reality is that sun lamps emit significantly greater quantities of UVA, contributing to premature skin aging and increasing the incidence of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. In fact, the United States Department of Health & Human Services lists UV radiation from the sun and artificial tanning devices such as tanning beds and tanning lamps as carcinogens (cancer-causing) substances. If you are looking for a sun-kissed glow, opt for a sunless tanner … your skin will thank you.

Ingredient of the Week: Hydroquinone-Reduce Age Spots

Among dermatologists, hydroquinone is the gold standard for treating unwanted pigmentation. It is the only FDA-recognized ingredient to safely and effectively lighten dark spots. It is available in both over-the-counter products (in concentrations up to 2 percent) and by prescription (up to 4 percent). Hydroquinone blocks the enzyme responsible for causing excess pigmentation, restoring skin’s natural color and tone. Find 2 percent hydroquinone in Rodan + Fields® REVERSE Skin Lightening Toner, REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment and UNBLEMISH Spot Fading Toner.

Shopping by SPF number

To reap the full benefits of your sunscreen, you should be using one teaspoon to cover your face. If you are only using a thin layer, an SPF 50 isn’t really a 50. The greater the SPF, the more likely a sunscreen will be heavy, greasy and whitening on the skin, making compliance a problem. We recommend using a cosmetically elegant SPF 15 or SPF 30 every day and reapplying it every few hours. Remember, when sunscreen is applied correctly:
SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays
SPF 50 blocks 99% of UVB rays

INGREDIENT OF THE WEEK

Zinc Oxide

You may think of white-nosed lifeguards when you think of zinc, but there’s a good reason they use it.  Zinc, technically known as zinc oxide, offers great protection against UVA “aging” rays. This physical (or inorganic) sunscreen is non-irritating, reflects light and is perfect for babies or adults with sensitive skin. In the past, sunscreens containing zinc oxide were hard to rub in, making the skin look pasty white. Now new, micronized versions make this ingredient invisible, allowing for highly elegant formulations. Find zinc oxide in Rodan + Fields® REVERSE UVA/UVB SPF 15 Sunscreen and SOOTHE UVA/UVB SPF 15 Sunscreen, UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20 and ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20.  Contact: Diane's website for this product of other sunscreens mentioned.

WHAT'S AGING YOUR SKIN MAY SURPRISE YOU! Age Spots

The Doctors estimate that sun damage impacts more than one hundred million Americans. Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields took this number to the streets. See what they found:In today’s youth-focused world, many women (and even some men) are prepared to spend thousands of dollars on cosmetic treatments like laser, Botox, or chemical peels to help improve their appearance. The top complexion concerns Drs. Rodan and Fields hear from their patients are dullness, discoloration and uneven skin tone, issues that may not be improved by any of these expensive procedures. Many are surprised to learn that all of these skin woes stem from sun damage and not the passage of time.  Sun damage is cumulative—that is why even 10-20 minutes of exposure each day can impact your skin in the long run. UVA light is of particular concern because it is a long wavelength, making it deeply penetrating and skin damaging. UVA is present year-round from sunup to sundown, 365 days per year, rain or shine. And it even penetrates through window glass in your house, office or car.  So whether we actively sunbathe or not, to some extent we all experience the aging effects of UVA and UVB rays. Need proof? Just compare the skin on your face to that of your sun-protected fanny and you’ll see what we mean.
While sun damage is a huge problem, there is no need to surrender. Stay tuned this month for advice on anti-aging treatments that really work to reverse sun damage, along with tips and insights on ways to fight it.
