Stripping Your Face with Harsh Astringents

Using an astringent with a high percentage of alcohol to get that “deep clean” feeling is actually hurting your skin. Unfortunately, these harsh astringents remove much more than dirt and oil from your face. They will also strip the skin of essential moisture, compromising the barrier. In response, your skin actually produces MORE oil to compensate for the dryness and the vicious cycle never ends. My pores look suddenly enormous. How can I shrink them?

Enlarged pores, especially visible on the cheeks and nose, are a common cosmetic concern for both men and women. Why do they appear larger as we age?

Pores are more obvious when they contain grey oxidized oil. Removing this sebum will make pores appear smaller temporarily, but once removed, sebum will naturally reform within one day. Did you know that we need sebum to naturally coat the inside of a pore and provide a protective film over the surface as a lipid barrier? This protects skin from environmental dehydration and assault from bacteria and toxins.

Pores widen with age. Collagen supports pore walls so they are long and more slender. Unfortunately, as we age collagen production decreases and pore walls slacken and become wide and flat, which enables them to fill with more oils and dead skin.

Why is my gauze pad dark and dirty just after cleansing my skin?

Medical-grade gauze is an aesthetician and dermatologist favorite because it deposits more liquid on skin than cotton balls or squares.  Gauze provides an extra bonus of micro-exfoliating to gently slough off dry skin cells. The dirt you see is usually dead skin cells.

Using Harsh Exfoliants-not for Beautiful skin

“Natural” isn’t necessarily better. Physical exfoliants like ground walnut shells and apricot pits that have gained popularity in cleansers are best avoided. Their sharp, jagged edges can cause micro-tears in the skin, opening the door for irritants and infectious agents to enter the skin. If you are looking for a grainy, exfoliating cleanser, opt for a product containing small, round and uniform particles like dimethicone or polyethylene beads. Scrubs made with sugar and salt crystals that dissolve when moistened are great “natural” alternatives.

CONFESSIONS OF A DERMATOLOGIST

Dr. Fields and I will be the first to tell you to run from the sun. That natural, sun-kissed glow may be pretty but it is hardly worth the risks of skin cancer, brown spots and accelerated aging. Just because I slather myself in sunscreen, hide under a huge hat and sport sunglasses so large they cover half my face doesn’t mean I’ve abandoned my Southern California beach babe roots in favor of a pasty white, librarian-like complexion. I want it all—especially when it comes to my skin. So here’s how I have learned to fake it:

First: Prep your skin by exfoliating: Before applying a self-tanning lotion, I scrub away dead, dry, scaly skin on my legs, chest and arms with a gentle micro-dermabrasion stick. And for a two-for-one benefit, I leave the micro-dermabrasion product on my legs for an even closer shave and enhanced exfoliation in one fell swoop. Smooth, freshly shaved and exfoliated skin ensures a uniform application of the self-tanning product.

Second: Moisturize the driest areas over your joints: Apply a thick coat of your favorite body lotion over the elbows, ankles and knees to prevent a concentrated uptake of the self tanner in areas where the skin is thickest.

Third: Apply a gradual self-tanning moisturizer for a more natural, and streak-free glow. My favorites are made by Jergens and Dove which are lightweight, full of good moisturizers and don’t smell like your average self-tanner.
