Do men really care whether their appearance is better described as tired and haggard rather than rugged and outdoorsy? Yes, more and more men do. The men of “yesteryear” never ventured into the world of skincare beyond using a bar of soap. Today’s guys are more often caught sneaking a dollap of eye cream or a scoop of micro-dermabrasion paste from their wife or girlfriend’s stash. But let’s face it, compared to women, men have a long way to go before fully embracing the “metrosexual man” within. And perhaps this is because there is less pressure for men to look young. Jane Fonda said it best: “Women are not forgiven for aging. Bob Redford’s lines of distinction are my old age wrinkles.”
While the wrinkle on a man’s face might be “distinguished,” the cause can be dangerous … lethal in fact. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the majority of people diagnosed with melanoma are men over the age of 50, and that risk continues to increase with every decade. And, they also found that men over the age of 40 have the highest annual exposure to UV rays. Not surprising considering most men are not diligent daily sunscreen users.
This month we will focus on men’s skincare, offering tips and advice for protecting the health of male skin. So whether you’re a man looking to dive into your first skincare routine or a woman looking out for a special man in your life, you’ll want to stay tuned this month to learn the ins and outs of male skincare.
