4 Skin Care Ingredients That Fight Aging

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of new ingredients introduced every year for treating the signs of aging skin. When looking for a product that can help combat the various conditions you may have, consider products that contain peptides, retinoids, Avobenzone and Octocrylene.

Peptides and retinoids are found in personal care products and are two ingredients that have been found to be very beneficial towards combating the aging process. Research has shown that these important ingredients have the most promise in preventing and correcting the signs of skin aging.

Peptides are small chains of amino acids that signal natural processes in the skin. As skin ages and collagen production slows, certain peptides send a false alarm to signal an increase in natural collagen production resulting in a firmer, smoother, less-lined complexion. The results from using peptides lies in its ability to increase collagen production while making the skin thicker, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Unfortunately, peptides are extremely expensive, costing ten thousand times more than a typical skincare ingredient. Formulations that contain clinically-proven levels often are quite pricey.

Retinoids or Retinols, the cosmeceutical cousin of tretinoin and commonly found in prescription-based Retin-A or Renova have been favored by dermatologists for decades. This potent ingredient is a derivative of Vitamin A which increases cell turnover by stimulating cells under the skin. This type of exfoliation removes the dead and damaged skin on the upper layers that typically make the skin look dull and blotchy. Retinoids deliver clinically proven results for reducing fine wrinkles, improving skin elasticity, brightening skin, and minimizing pores.

Another important ingredient to fight the signs of aging is Avobenzone, which is a key blocker of Ultraviolet-A (UVA) rays. The colorless carotenoids used are free radical fighting antioxidants and anti-inflammatories which provide prolonged ultraviolet ray protection and decelerated photo-aging. Avobenzone is commonly found in sun care products, baby sun care products, daily sun protection and decorative cosmetics.

Lastly, Octocrylene is a liquid Ultraviolet-B (UVB) sunscreen ingredient with very good protection. It's a highly effective UVB filter and a photo stabilizer for other sunscreens like Avobenzone. It is also an excellent solvent for solid sunscreens. Only two percent gives a Sun Protectant Factor (SPF) of six.

Remember to always use sunscreen protection with at least an SPF 15, even on a cloudy day. The UVA/UVB rays are still damaging and the best wrinkle is the one you never get!
